How to Get the Free (Really!!) Credit Reports you are Entitled to by Law

It is wise for everyone to check their credit report periodically to make sure there are no significant errors. Among the many benefits of a good, clean credit history are lower interest rates on and greater access to home loans and credit cards.

Many companies advertise "Free" credit reports online. Most of these sites are simply come-ons for advertisers. They will provide you some information for free, but are primarily in the business of upselling you additional services, such as credit monitoring services etc. In fact, the federal government has recently fined some of the biggest and best known nationally advertised companies for false and misleading advertising.

The law requires the 3 major credit reporting agencies to give you a free credit report to review at least once each year. In response, the agencies have established a collaborative website www.annualcreditreport.com.

The site provides your complete credit report for free. For a nominal charge, they will provide some additional services - but they do not push them on the user. The primary purpose of the site seems to be compliance with the regulations providing consumers with access to their credit data.
